Winter Grazing

Great Winter Feed

We grow about 20 acres of wheat on the farm each year. After the wheat is harvested in August and the straw is baled and stacked, we plant a blend of different cover crops including winter peas, forage turnips and triticale. Before winter arrives, we put an electric fence around the field an turn the cows out on it. Along with being helpful to soil health and erosion control, these crops also provide great winter forage. The cattle graze the greens and grasses as well as pluck the turnips from the ground and eat them. They also leave manure on the field and not in the corrals which is beneficial as well. This system has proven to be very helpful to the farm as well as the cattle operation as well.
